That voice muffler is probably annoying to wear but probably could be quite useful if you live with eavesdroppers that scan your conversations for gossip material. I lived with one of those. Never felt like I could make a phone call without be listened to, sometimes also given their 2 cents or even judged, and always looking for gossip material.
